New Year Reading List

For the last few weeks of my break from school I've found the time to rekindle my love of reading, and finally this morning I finished the 960-page journey that is Margaret George's Memoirs of Cleopatra that had me living in the time of Cleopatra the Great exploring the lands Alexandria and Rome. I became so immersed in the ancient world that I should probably cut this short in fear that I will never return to reality. Either way, I wouldn't even be able to describe in words how amazing this book is.

Now, on to the next one. Last week I bought two books from the 50cent shelf at the library, knowing that my journey with Cleopatra was coming to a sad end. I actually wasn't even thinking of taking home any books, but, just like any sale, I couldn't walk away from what I like to call the "hidden gems."

Tom Wolfe's The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby and
Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls

So now the question is: which to start first?

In one of my high school english classes a few years ago I was allowed to choose which books to read from a list, and so I spent the year reading Vonnegut, Kesey, and Kerouac, as well as Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. I'm excited to read this Tom Wolfe book, but I'm thinking it might be crazy transition from the traditional writing by George. Hmm... Valley of the Dolls, anyone?

My Winners for the 2011 Golden Globes

I don't normally watch award shows and even when I do I typically end up getting distracted and/or bored-  except when it comes to the red carpet pre-shows of course. For tonight's Golden Globe awards I actually caught most of the red carpet arrivals (as well as some of the first few minutes of the show) and I was loving what I saw...

My absolute favorite of the night:

January Jones in Versace

I heard January Jones tell an interviewer that she saw the Versace dress in a different color at the spring show and requested it in red. Well, she definitely got that one right. She looks stunning in red and her hair and makeup compliment the dress perfectly.

Versace Spring11

My second favorite is beyond amazing from head to toe:
Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood

Running up:
Michelle Williams in Valentino

I love love love the dress and Michelle Williams matches it perfectly with her short hair and ethereal beauty. However, I do think that she's in need of an accessory.

Sorry Anne, you look gorgeous...

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive

But Angelina did it better:

Angelina Jolie in Versace

Best Dressed Man:

Robert Downey Jr. with fabulous hair

And come the Oscars, hosted by James Franco, I will be watching intently so I don't miss a second of this smile:

City of Sand

A few days after Christmas I got the chance to go to Coronado for the first time. Coronado is a beautiful island about 20 minutes from Downtown San Diego, right across the bay and accessible by the famous Coronado bridge. My mom was visiting me from Hawaii and even though she was miserably freezing in this 65 degree weather (she's so spoiled!) she humored me by playing tourist. We took the Old Town Trolley tour which in my opinion is slightly overrated and when we got off near the Hotel del Coronado all I wanted to do was bask in the sunlight on the beach while all she wanted to do was bask in a warm room with a beer. Too bad for her, we headed straight for the beach. And even though we spent about 2 and a half minutes on the beach before heading back it was beyond worth it for me- I saw the most amazingly intricate sand castle I had ever seen. Really, it was more of a sand city, complete with thousands of windows, sets of stairs, and tiny little sand people. I'm now inspired to become a sand architect. Well, at least for a day.

In the background of the first picture is the Hotel Del Coronado, and in the second picture is my bundled-up mom. I kept trying to tell her that it really wasn't that cold but she wasn't having it.
